The Press Office of the Holy See informed that the Pope accepted the resignation from the pastoral government of the archdiocese of Santiago de Chile presented by Cardinal Ricardo Ezzati Andrello, S.D.B. The Pope named Apostolic Administrator sede vacante et ad nutum Sanctae Sedis of the archdiocese of Santiago de Chile Celestino Aós Braco, O.F.M. Cap., until then bishop of Copiapó, Chile.
The Press Office of the Holy See informed that the Pope named Cardinal Pietro Parolin, secretary of State, pontifical legate to the celebrations of the enthronment of King Rama X of Thailand, His Majesty Maha Vajiralongkorn, programmed for Bangkok on May 4-6, 2019.
At 11 am, the funeral of Cardinal Godfried Danneels, who passed away on Thursday, March 14, 2019 at the age of 85 years, took place. As early as 9 a.m., the drone of Saint-Rombaut Cathedral in Mechelen rang 85 times, just as the coffin of the deceased entered the building discreetly.
The celebration was presided over by the current Archbishop of Mechelen-Brussels, Cardinal Jozef De Kesel, president of the Belgian Episcopal Conference. He was surrounded by all the bishops of Belgium and the apostolic nuncios to Belgium and the European Union. Also present were several distinguished bishops, such as Aloys Jousen and Albert Houssiau (Liège), Jan De Bie (Mechelen-Brussel), Paul Van Den Berghe (Antwerp) and Arthur Luysterman (Ghent). Congolese bishops also concelebrated with Cardinal De Kesel, as did Cardinal Adrianus Johannes Simonis, archbishop emeritus of Utrecht in the Netherlands, and Frans Wiertz, bishop emeritus of Roermond (Netherlands). Many priests also participated in the solemn celebration.King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of the Belgians, Princess Astrid and her husband Archduke Loren and Prince Laurent, also were present. Several personalities also participated in the funeral in the cathedral, including the Presidents of the House and Senate as well as the Flemish Parliament, Ministers Kris Peeters, Koen Geens and Pieter De Crem, the First President and the President of the Court of Cassation, the governor of Antwerp and the vice-governor of Brussels. Also present were the Minister of State and former Chief of Staff of the King, Jacques van Ypersele of Strihou, as well as the mayor of Malines Bart Somers, several aldermen of the city and the president of the CD & V Wouter Beke were also present. Several personalities from the academic world such as the Rector of KU Leuven, the Vice-President of the Academic Council of UC Louvain and two former rectors of UC Louvain and many representatives of other faiths (Orthodox, Jewish and Muslim) also were present. Cardinal De Kesel thanked them for their presence and the desire to offer their respect and friendship for the deceased prelate. The Apostolic Nuncio to the Kingdom of Belgium, Archbishop Augustine Kasujja read the message of condolence sent by Pope Francis.
Cardinal Godfried Danneels, of the title of Sant’Anastasia, archbishop emeritus of Mechelen-Brussel (Malines-Bruxelles), Military Ordinary emeritus for Belgium, died this morning. Pope Francis sent Cardinal Jozef De Kesel, archbishop of Malines-Bruxelles, a telegram of condolence.
After the death of Cardinal Godfried Danneels, the number of cardinals is now 220. The cardinal electors are 122; 18 have been created by Pope John Paul II; 47 by Pope Benedict XVI; and 57 by Pope Francis. The cardinal non-electors are now 98, of which 56 were created by Pope John Paul II; 28 by Pope Benedict XVI; and 14 by Pope Francis.

In the Roman church in piazzale dei Santi Pietro e Paolo, the Jesuit Cardinal was welcomed by the pastor, Conventual Father Nicola Scarlatino, who presnted the cardinal the crucifix for the kissing and veneration. Before the Mass presided by the cardinal, pontifical cerimoniere Marco Agostini, who directed the rite, read the bull. then the cardinal had a discourse of thanks that was translated from Spanish by Father Augusto Zampini, of the Dicastery for the Service of the Integral Human Development. "I note - said the cardinal in a short statement in late morning - of the court's decision. Regardless of my personal fate, I reiterate my compassion for the victims. After arriving at the Minor Roman Basilica in via Acciaioli, the cardinal was welcomed by the pastor Don Roberto Paolonie and by Monsignor Luigi Veturi, who until a few months ago had guided the community. Upon arriving in the church, the pastor presented Cardinal Petrocchi the crucifix for the kissing and veneration. The cardinal then presided over the celebration of the Mass. Cardinal José de Jesús Pimiento Rodríguez, archbishop emeritus of Manizales, Colombia, turned one hundred years old. The other centenarian cardinal of recent times was Corrado Bafile, prefect emeritus of the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints, who died on February 3, 2005, at the age of 101 years.
The Press Office of the Holy See issued the following Communique by which Theodore Edgar McCarrick, archbishop emeritus of Washington, D.C., United States of America, was dismissed from the clerical state. A panel of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith found him guilty on January 11, 2019. Archbishop McCarrick appealed the decision, but the appeal was rejected on the following February 13 by the Congregation itself. Archbishop McCarrick was informed of the decision on February 15 and Pope Francis recognized the definitive nature of this decision "made in accord with law," making a further appeal impossible.

The Press Office of the Holy See informed that on February 12, 2019, Holy Father Francis received in an audience Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu, prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints, and authorized the Congregation to promulgate the decrees concerning eleven miracles attributed to the intercession of two blesseds, the martyrdom of a servant of God, and the heroic virtues of five servants of God. The first one is Blessed John Henry Newman, cardinal of the Holy Roman Church, founder of the Oratory of S. Filippo Neri in England; born in London, England, on February 21, 1801 and died in Edgbaston, England, on August 11, 1890. Among the five servants of God is Józef Mindszenty, cardinal of the Holy Roman Church, former archbishop of Esztergom and primate of Hungary; born in Csehimindszent, Hungary, on March 29, 1892 and died in Vienna, Austria, on May 6, 1975.

L'Osservatore Romano, Anno CLIX n. 23 (48.051), Città del Vaticano, lunedì-martedì 28-29 gennaio 2019, p. 4, informed that in the evening of Saturday January 26, 2019, Spanish Cardinal Aquilino Bocos Merino, C.M.F., solemnly took possession of the deaconry of Santa Lucia del Gonfalone. In the Roman church in via dei Banchi Vecchi, the Claretian cardinal was welcomed by the rector Franco Incampo, C.M.F., who presented him the crucifix for the kissing and veneration. Successively, the cardinal presided over the Mass, which was concelebrated by Franciscan Archbishop José Luis Rodríguez Carballo, secretary of the Congregation for the Institutes of Consecrated Life and the Societies of Apostolic Life; and by numerous Claretian priests. Pontifical cerimoniere Pietro Enrico Stefanetti directed the rite and read the papal bull.
The exequial Mass for Cardinal Fernando Sebastián Aguilar, C.M.F., was celebrated at noon in the cathedral basilica of Málaga presided by Jesús Catalá, bishop of Málaga, and concelebrated by numerous Spanish bishops. The celebration began with the first station in the church of the Sagrario, where the ardent chapel was. From there, the cardinal's remains were transferred on the shoulders of several priests to the Cathedral, to start an emotional ceremony in which psrticipsted the apostolic nuncio of His Holiness, Renzo Fratini; Cardinals Juan José Omella Omella and Carlos Amigo Vallejo; some twenty bishops of the dioceses of Pamplona, Ávila, Granada and Sevilla, (among them Bishop Ramón Buxarrais, emeritus of Málaga). Also concelebrated numerous priests from Málaga and other dioceses; the secretary general of the Spanish Episcopal Conference Luis Argüello; and the Provincial of the Claretians of Bética, Father Félix J. Martínez. Several bishops were asked to place over the casket the episcopal insignias; the miter, the crosier and the evangeliario.

When the cardinal arrived at the Roman parish in via Cardinale Garampi, he was welcomed by the pastor, Don Francesco Galluzzo, who presented him the crucifix for the kissing and veneration. The pastor also read the pontifical bull. The cardinal presided over the Mass, which was concelebrated, among others, Archbishop Marcello Bartolucci and by Father Bogusław Stanisław Turek, respectively secretary and undersecretary of the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints, and by some twenty other priests. The rite was directed by Monsignor Ján Dubina, pontifical cerimoniere. Among those present were representatives of the Secretariat of State and of the dicastery guided by Cardinal Becciu.

Cardinal John Tong Hon, bishop emeritus of Hong Kong, China, was named apostolic administrator of that diocese. Bishop Michael Yeung Ming-cheung, who succeeded the cardinal as bishop of Hong Kong on August 1, 2017, died on January 3, 2019.
The Press Office of the Holy See informed that Holy Father Francis named Cardinal Fernando Filoni, prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, special papal envoy to the celebration of the Fourth National Eucharistic Congress in Taiwan, programmed for March 1, 2019 in the Diocese of Chiayi.
